Jointly organized by the Tsilhqot’in National Government (TNG), TRUFA and TRU, the purpose of the panel is to provide information regarding the history and implications of the Tsilhqot’in Land Title Decision.

The importance of the decision is reflected in the expertise of the panel. In addition to a number of Tsilhqot’in chiefs, including Chief Roger William, Vice-Chair of the Tsilhqot’in National Government and plaintiff in the Tsilhqot’in Title Case, senior academics from across the country will also be in attendance, including Professor Kent McNeil, a leading scholar on Aboriginal Title, from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University; and Professor James Tully, distinguished professor of Political Science, Law, Indigenous Governance and Philosophy at the University of Victoria. The speakers will provide an overview of the case and its meaning for Indigenous people and all Canadians.

“The nature of this historic decision requires public dialogue to understand the resulting possible changes,” said Alan Shaver, TRU President and Vice-Chancellor. “TRU is not only providing a venue for this important discussion but also has gathered experts from across the country for a discourse which will be significant for all Canadians.”

“Bringing leading scholars and academics together to discuss the Tsilhqot’in Title case is one way to keep the public engaged, but also functions to provide clarity and ensure that a broader dialogue is on-going with respect to how reconciliation and justice is implemented within the context of Crown and First Nations relations,” said Chief Russell Myers-Ross of Yunesit’in.

The event will run from 6 – 9 p.m. on Monday, November 10 and will be held in the Gymnasium at the TRU – Williams Lake Campus.
